Pre-Idea · Idea to Starter Business

A year is the real cost of the wrong idea — and you pay it before you ever find out.

You already know the danger isn't laziness. It's the silent year spent building the wrong thing well — evenings, weekends and savings into something no one was ever going to pay for. A hobby with a price on it.

Before You Begin is seven modules for the step before the idea exists. It walks you from "I want to start something" to one concrete business you could begin this week — the problem it solves, proof someone already pays, real numbers, and a legitimate structure. Validate first. Then begin.

What goes wrong before the beginning

The expensive part isn't starting. It's starting on the wrong thing.

The wrong idea, built well

Effort was never the problem. The problem is the decision that was skipped before the effort began — whether anyone actually pays for this. Built well, the wrong idea just takes longer to tell you the truth.

An income wish without a weekly number

"I want to make $25k" stays a wish until it becomes a number you can picture doing — about ten jobs a week at fifty dollars. If the weekly number has never been calculated, there is no plan yet. There's a hope.

A hobby with a price on it

If no one already pays to have this problem solved — with money, time, or a clumsy workaround — it isn't a business yet. Hearing that early is protection, not judgement. It stops major heartache later.

The course

Seven modules. One startable business.

01

Business, Or An Expensive Hobby?

The reframe the whole course stands on: startable beats perfect. What a starter business actually needs on day one, what's decorative, and what the wrong idea really costs — because you pay that price before you ever find out it was wrong.

02

The Problem & The Proof

Every business that works solves a problem someone is already paying to solve — with money, with time, or with a workaround. This module makes you name that problem, find the proof, and take the honest business-vs-hobby read. A mirror that informs, never a gate.

03

Service or Product?

The fork that shapes everything after it — what you sell, what it costs to start, how fast the first dollar arrives. Why a first business is usually a service, and why "not sure yet" is a legitimate answer: you explore both sides before you choose.

04

Finding The Work

Curated starter services and how to research your own: find three operators already doing the work, learn the going rate, and read competitors correctly — they're proof of demand, not a wall.

05

The Tools & The Money In

Startup cost is job number one, not job one hundred. What it actually takes to open the doors, a price that beats your true cost, and the running costs people forget until they hurt.

06

The Numbers That Make It Real

Reverse your income goal into a price and a weekly number — the difference between "I want $25k" and "about ten jobs a week at $50". Your break-even floor, and an honest check on how that weekly number feels.

07

Make It Legitimate, Then Begin

Sole trader or company, GST, insurance — for Australia and New Zealand, routed to the government source of truth for each decision. A recap of the decisions you've made, and the handoff into your Starter Business Sketch.

The course closes into a guided builder — the exploration where your answers become the Sketch. Calculators sit beside the questions a beginner won't know how to answer yet, so not knowing is never an exit.

What you leave with

A Starter Business Sketch. One page. Real numbers.

  • One plain sentence describing the business you could start this week

  • The problem it solves — and the proof someone already pays to have it solved

  • The numbers: startup cost, your price, jobs or units a week to hit your income target, and the break-even floor

  • A structure and tax position — sole trader vs company, GST — for Australia or New Zealand

  • Three first actions for the coming week

  • Personal feedback on your submitted Sketch from a SigmaSync specialist

A boring business you start beats a brilliant one you plan forever.

Who this is for

  • People who want to start a business but don't yet know what — the sentence stops at "I want to start something"

  • People with two or three ideas and no honest way to choose between them

  • Owners already running a business, weighing a second one — and wanting to test it properly this time

  • Anyone who'd rather find out "this is a hobby for now" before the spend, not after it

Who this is not for

  • Operating businesses with staff and clients — the 4-Week Jumpstart or Bootcamp is the right entry point

  • Founders whose idea is already chosen and validated — Before You Build is your step

  • Anyone looking for a motivational program — this is honest, not inspirational

Already know exactly what you're building? Before You Build is your step — it takes a chosen idea and makes the foundation decisions around it.

Where it fits

The step before every other step.

Before You Begin finds and validates the idea. Before You Build then makes the foundation decisions around it. From there, the pathway continues as the business becomes real — the same clients move through the Jumpstart, the Bootcamp, and beyond.

Common questions

Who is Before You Begin for?

People who want to start a business but can't yet finish the sentence "my business is…". You might have no idea, or three ideas and no way to choose. The course walks you from "I want to start something" to one concrete business you could begin this week — or an honest "not yet", with what would have to change.

How is it different from Before You Build?

Before You Build assumes the idea already exists and makes the foundation decisions around it — positioning, offer, pricing. Before You Begin is the step earlier: finding the idea, proving someone already pays for the problem it solves, and putting real numbers on it. Many people go through both, in that order.

What do I leave with?

A one-page Starter Business Sketch: one plain sentence describing the business, the problem it solves and the proof it's real, the numbers — startup cost, price, jobs a week to hit your income target, break-even floor — a structure and tax position, and three first actions. You submit it and get personal feedback from a SigmaSync specialist before it's finalised.

Is this financial, tax or legal advice?

No. Where a decision needs an authority — business structure, GST, insurance, registration — the course routes you to the government source of truth: the ATO, ASIC and business.gov.au in Australia; IRD, the Companies Office and NZBN in New Zealand. It teaches you what to ask; it doesn't answer on their behalf.

Can I use it to plan a second business?

Yes — the course plans one business end to end, deliberately. If you're an existing client and a second business is forming, the second run is 50% ($600 incl. GST). It's the exploration builder only — the teaching doesn't repeat — and you still get the full help of a SigmaSync specialist on the new Sketch. Your first Sketch stays exactly as it is. It's available from inside your portal.

Validate first. Then begin.

One startable business, or an honest "not yet".

Either answer is worth more than a year spent finding out the hard way. The course is self-paced in your own portal, and your submitted Sketch gets personal feedback from a SigmaSync specialist before it's finalised.
